Biography

Charles Simeon Baker trained as a lawyer and built a reputation for sound judgment before being elected to represent upstate New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1890s, where he spoke for farmers and veterans and worked to reform administrative practices. His steady demeanor and attention to detail made him a respected voice on matters of commerce and public service.

After leaving Congress he resumed his legal practice and continued to support civic institutions in the region; he died in 1902 and was laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery.
