Charles Sumner

Biography

Charles Sumner, born in 1790, served as a librarian while keeping close ties with the congregation of the Church of St John the Evangelist in Hale. He took great care to preserve knowledge and to make the quiet solace of books available to those who sought it in the parish.

He passed in 1874, leaving a legacy of gently shared wisdom and service to both the library and the church community. His commitment to learning and to the comfort of his neighbours is still recalled in Hale today.
