Charles Sweeney

1919–2004 (age 85)

U.S. Air Force pilot

Biography

Charles Sweeney embodied the cool composure of a U.S. Air Force pilot as he led crews through some of World War II's most consequential missions, flying Bockscar to deliver the bomb over Nagasaki and then shouldering the complex legacy of that mission with solemn care. He later commanded B-29 units stateside, guiding airmen through training and policy changes that kept the force ready for the next chapter.

After the war he remained a steady advocate for veterans, speaking honestly about the burden of fast-moving history while also celebrating the bonds forged in the sky; his peers credited him with both technical mastery and a deep sense of responsibility. He rests at Massachusetts National Cemetery, leaving behind a career defined by duty and resolve.
