Biography

Charles Whitworth, 1st Earl Whitworth (1752–1825) devoted himself to diplomacy and the service of the crown, representing Britain with skill at the courts of Russia and elsewhere during the fraught years of the Napoleonic wars. His calm judgment and courteous bearing earned him wide respect from allies and rivals alike.

He later retired to the care of his estates and the parish of St Nicholas, Sevenoaks, where the churchyard preserves the memory of a statesman who always sought peace without renouncing principle.
