Biography

Charles Wooden, VC, earned the highest honors for his steadfast courage during the Indian Rebellion, standing with comrades amidst the chaos of relief operations and refusing to leave the wounded behind. His actions at Lucknow and beyond were guided by a deep sense of responsibility to both soldiers and civilians.

Later stationed near Dover, he continued to mentor younger troops and to reflect on the price of war, urging respect for the dignity of every soldier. The graveside in St James Cemetery keeps alive the memory of a brave officer who led with both daring and compassion.
