Biography

Chester W. Nimitz rose through the ranks of the United States Navy to command the Pacific Fleet during World War II, skillfully blending carrier power, submarines, and logistics to break the advance of the Imperial Japanese Navy and secure decisive victories across the Pacific.

After the war he helped shape the postwar Navy as Chief of Naval Operations, championing sailors' training and the transition to a modern force, and he spent his later years in the Bay Area before being laid to rest at Golden Gate National Cemetery.
