Biography

Clement Claiborne Clay (1816–1882) spent his life in service to the people of Alabama, representing them in both the United States Senate and, in later years, as one of their most articulate advocates for the Southern cause. He carried himself with scholarly poise, defending his convictions even as he sought reconciliation and a return to peace.

The latter part of his life was devoted to family and to the quiet study of history, a faithful citizen whose pen and presence were sought for counsel and companionship by friends across the region.
