Biography
Clifton Sprague rose through the ranks of the U.S. Navy and as an admiral commanded Task Unit 77.4.3, the escort carrier force known as Taffy 3, during the Battle off Samar, where his judgment and the courage of his sailors helped turn back overwhelming Japanese forces.
He later devoted himself to mentoring younger officers, ensuring that the lessons of those desperate hours were carried forward in peacetime training and the stewardship of the fleet.
