Cyril Edward Gourley earned the Victoria Cross for extraordinary bravery during the First World War in Mesopotamia, where his actions in the face of overwhelming fire helped save comrades and secure vital positions.
He lived until 1982, and the graves of Grange Cemetery, West Kirby now honor a decorated officer whose bravery and quiet dignity continue to inspire military historians and visitors alike.
