Cyrus Redding

1785–1870 (age 85)

Biography

Cyrus Redding brought a lively curiosity to his work as a journalist and editor, writing on literature, travel, and food for numerous periodicals in the early nineteenth century. His readable essays and memoirs, including accounts of life beyond London, offered both gossip and thoughtful reflection, and he earned the trust of readers who followed his surveys of books and tastes.

In later years he made his home near Willesden, where he remained a friendly correspondent to younger writers and a repository of literary anecdotes, while his writings continued to inform historians of the era. The calm dignity with which he lived out his final years matched the steady tone of the magazines he once guided.
