Dan Pagis

1930–1986 (age 56)

Biography

Dan Pagis survived the Holocaust and channeled that experience into a powerful body of poetry and scholarship, including the unforgettable lines of "Written in Pencil in the Sealed Train." He also taught literature with humility at Bar-Ilan University, helping students hear the weight behind every word.

His poems remain quiet yet unflinching reminders of memory and moral responsibility, and his friends remember him as a gentle guide who believed in the healing power of language; he rests at Har HaMenuchot.
