Biography

Daniel Edgar Sickles parlayed his early legal and political career into service as a Union general in the Civil War, where he commanded the III Corps and lost a leg while defending the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. His bold, if controversial, actions earned him the Medal of Honor and later roles in Congress and as Minister to Spain.

After the war he remained a prominent public figure, championing veterans' interests and helping shape national memory of the conflict before resting at Arlington National Cemetery amongst fellow defenders of the Republic.
