Biography
Daniel Henry Chamberlain, born in 1835, rose from legal studies to become governor of South Carolina during the turbulent years of Reconstruction, guided by a desire to protect civil rights and to restore confidence in governance.
After leaving office he returned to his law practice, lectured on law and public affairs, and remained a steadfast supporter of public education, a voice for reconciliation, and a mentor to young lawyers seeking to uphold the rule of law; Pine Grove Cemetery now marks his resting place.
