Daniel Sidney Appleton, born in 1824, built D. Appleton & Company into a leading publisher that brought literature, science, and education to a wide American readership.

Along with his business achievements, he supported educational causes and took pride in leaving a grieving city better informed; his name is honored among the graves at Green-Wood Cemetery.
