David Brewster

Biography

Sir David Brewster (1781–1868) was a distinguished Scottish scientist and astronomer whose contributions to optical physics and scientific inquiry earned him widespread recognition. His career spanned the late eighteenth and most of the nineteenth century, during which he made significant advances in the understanding of light and its properties.

Brewster's legacy extends beyond his scientific achievements to his role as an educator and promoter of scientific knowledge. He served as Principal of the University of Edinburgh and was knighted in recognition of his contributions to science. His burial at Melrose Abbey reflects both his Scottish heritage and his standing as one of the era's most respected natural philosophers.
