David Oluwale

1930–1969 (age 39)

Biography

David Oluwale came to Leeds from Nigeria as a young man, seeking steady work and hoping to weave himself into the fabric of the city.

While he formed friendships and pursued quiet interests such as reading, he also endured homelessness and the prejudices that weighed on many migrants of his era; his death in 1969 after repeated mistreatment by the authorities became a painful reminder of the need for accountability, and he is remembered at Killingbeck as a symbol of compassion and resilience.
