Doris Miller, born in 1919, was a U.S. Navy Messman whose courage at Pearl Harbor inspired a nation. Though he held a humble rank, his determination and calm under fire during the attack in 1941 symbolized the bravery of countless sailors and brought overdue recognition to African American service members.
