Douglas Cleverdon
1903–1987 (age 84)
Biography
Douglas Cleverdon opened the Dolphin Bookshop and became a champion of writers such as T.S. Eliot and Ivor Gurney, using his rebel spirit to bring obscure poetry and modern work to a wider audience. He treasured conversations with authors and believed that bookselling and publishing could co-exist as acts of friendship and discovery.
He later produced recordings, notably helping Dylan Thomas capture his voice for posterity, and collaborated with artists and musicians to turn texts into living encounters, always adopting a craftsman's care for detail. His influence lives on in the way books can still be celebrated as art objects and in the importance placed on recording the spoken word.
