Biography

Ebenezer Bassett was the first African-American to serve as a United States minister abroad when in 1869 he was appointed to Haiti, where he used the office to defend the rights of Black citizens and represent American interests with dignity.

After his diplomatic service he continued to advocate for justice at home, and his grave at Grove Street Cemetery remains a reminder of the courage and integrity he brought to public life.
