Edmund Cartwright

1743–1823 (age 80)

Biography

Edmund Cartwright, born 1743, was an inventor and clergyman whose design of the power loom helped transform the fabric industry, while his gentle sermons encouraged both artisans and farmers.

In the latter years of his life he found renewed solace at the Parish Church of St Mary in Battle, where he supported the minister, championed education, and encouraged temperate industry among his neighbours.
