Biography

Eduard Ahrens was a devoted linguist and clergyman whose life spanned the early decades of the nineteenth century in the Baltic provinces. Educated in theology and the study of languages, he championed the Estonian tongue at a time when the vernacular was gaining recognition in religious life and in print, ministering to congregations with a compassionate spirit and a scholar’s eye.

His careful work on Estonian grammar and syntax, along with translations of liturgical texts, laid foundations that helped shape modern Estonian orthography. Colleagues and parishioners alike remember Ahrens for his tireless efforts to make the divine service intelligible to Estonians and for inspiring future generations of scholars to cherish their native speech.
