Biography

Eduard Clam-Gallas, born in 1805 into the storied Clam-Gallas family, served the Austrian Empire as a politician who tried to reconcile the interests of the Habsburg court with those of the Bohemian lands. He held posts in the imperial administration, promoted the improvement of infrastructure and education, and used his influence to foster the arts and scholarship that celebrated the heritage of Prague and its surroundings.

He died in 1891, leaving behind a reputation for measured counsel and a belief in governance rooted in duty rather than ambition, and he was laid to rest in the Gallas and Clam-Gallas Vault where his family continues to mark his memory.
