Edward Bransfield, born in 1785, served as a Royal Navy officer whose skill and perseverance helped chart the Antarctic coastline in 1819 and secure Britain's understanding of the southern seas.
He spent his later years in Brighton, where a modest grave honors the explorer who brought so much of the icy southern continent into view.
