Edward Everett Hale was a prolific author and clergyman whose short story "The Man Without a Country" stirred patriotic feeling and compassion across the nation during the Civil War era. His writings and sermons championed social reform and the moral responsibilities of citizenship.
Hale also devoted himself to education and charity, helping to found institutions such as the Sailors’ Snug Harbor and lending his voice to causes that sought to uplift the disadvantaged.
