Biography

Edward Hodges Baily trained at the Royal Academy and went on to sculpt national figures with restrained dignity, the most famous being the seated Nelson crowning Nelson's Column.

He also created church monuments and portrait busts, always attending to expressive drapery and calm proportions, and his oeuvre helped define the tone of public commemoration in his era; he is interred at Highgate Cemetery.
