Edward Norton Lorenz
1917–2008 (age 91)
mathematician and meteorologist
Biography
Edward Norton Lorenz pioneered the study of deterministic chaos, revealing how tiny shifts in weather models could have outsized consequences and forever altering meteorology and mathematics. His discovery of the Lorenz attractor and the so-called butterfly effect sparked a new appreciation for complexity in the natural world.
Lorenz was a beloved mentor to students at MIT and beyond, inviting them to explore the poetry hidden in differential equations, and his curiosity now rests peacefully at Waterville Valley Cemetery.
