Biography

Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, won renown as a Royal Navy officer whose bold tactics in the Napoleonic wars and during the bombardment of Algiers advanced British interests and humanitarian aims.

Raised to the peerage and sitting in the House of Lords as Viscount Exmouth, he kept a watchful eye on seamen's welfare, the development of the navy, and the relief of shipwrecked crews until his death in 1833; he is commemorated near Christow.
