Biography
Edwin Alderman was a transformative figure in American higher education, serving as president of the University of Virginia after earlier appointments at the University of North Carolina and Tulane University and guiding UVA through an era of expansion, modernization, and renewed academic ambition.
He championed rigorous scholarship, broadened access to learning, and inspired colleagues and students alike, and even in death his leadership continues to shape the culture of the university he loved as he rests in the University of Virginia Cemetery and Columbarium.
