Eleanor Elkins Widener used her social prominence to advance causes of education and humanitarianism, becoming a remarkable patron when tragedy struck her family. After the loss of her son and husband in the Titanic disaster, she resolved to honor their memory through gifts that would benefit future generations, most notably the Widener Library at Harvard.
