Biography
Born in 1906, Eleanor Estes first taught reading and writing to young students before turning to full-time storytelling, transforming the rhythms of everyday childhood into gentle novels such as The Moffats, The Hundred Dresses, and The Witch Family.
Her work earned a Newbery Medal and abiding affection, and she remained a quiet force for kindness in children’s literature until her passing, now remembered at Oak Grove Cemetery.
