Biography

Elizabeth Buffum Chace (1806–1899) devoted her life to social reform, advancing causes from abolition to women’s suffrage while rallying others through eloquent speeches and organizational leadership. As a member of a notable Quaker family, she brought moral clarity and perseverance to every campaign she supported.

Her efforts to protect workers, aid refugees, and expand democratic participation left an imprint on Rhode Island and the nation, and she is honored today at Swan Point Cemetery for her tireless advocacy.
