Elizabeth Duncan Koontz, born in 1919, was an educator from North Carolina who became the first African American president of the National Education Association and championed smarter, fairer schools during her tenure with the U.S. Office of Education.
Her advocacy for teachers and students alike continues to inspire educators, and she is remembered fondly near Oakdale Union Hill Cemetery.
