Biography

Elizabeth Smith of Hawkshead became admired for the accuracy and elegance of her translations from Latin and Greek, producing editions that brought classical authors into new English conversations and engaging with mathematicians and philosophers through lively correspondence despite the frailty of her health.

When she died in 1806, the scholarly circles she had nurtured mourned a thoughtful intellect who treated ancient texts with both affection and rigorous care.
