Ellen Gulbranson
1863–1947 (age 84)
Biography
Ellen Gulbranson, born in 1863 in Sweden, became a commanding presence on the Wagnerian and Nordic stages through performances marked by vocal power and dramatic sincerity. She devoted decades to the demanding repertoire, appearing at Bayreuth, the Royal Swedish Opera, and other houses while helping establish a tradition of German opera in Scandinavia.
After retiring from the stage she turned to teaching, carrying her experience to a new generation of singers and ensuring the lessons of her career were shared with the Nordic opera community; she visited Oslo often and inspired young artists with her tales of theaters across Europe. Her burial in Oslo honors a life spent lifting the art of singing across national borders.
