Biography
Ellen Powell Thompson studied the plants of the American West as part of expeditions led by her brother, John Wesley Powell, and she published botanical findings that enriched the nation’s understanding of its landscapes. She balanced this scientific work with teaching and a lifelong commitment to civic improvement.
As an advocate for women’s suffrage, she believed strongly in opportunities for all citizens to shape the nation’s future. Her family chose Arlington National Cemetery as her resting place, where she is remembered for her intellect and civic courage.
