Biography

Elnathan Phelps was born in 1734 and passed away in 1813 at the remarkable age of seventy-nine. He was interred in Pownal Center Cemetery, where his memory is preserved among the community members he knew throughout his long life.

Phelps lived through the entire Revolutionary period and into the early years of the American republic, experiencing firsthand the birth of a nation. His nearly eighty years of life provided him with a unique vantage point on the transformation of colonial America into an independent state, and his longevity speaks to the resilience of his generation.
