Biography

Ephraim C. Dawes answered the call of his generation and served as an officer for the Union during the Civil War, later turning his disciplined mind to business and the chronicling of his comrades’ valor. He maintained a deep respect for history and for the shared sacrifices that knit the country together after the conflict.

In civilian life he was a steady citizen of Springfield and surrounding towns, supporting veterans’ associations and local institutions with the same loyalty he showed on the battlefield. His memory rests at Oak Grove Cemetery as a reminder of the courage and integrity that guided him.
