Ephraim McDowell (1771–1830) earned a reputation as a pioneering surgeon during the very earliest years of American medicine, bringing courage and skill to difficult cases. He served patients with steady hands and a compassionate heart, pushing the boundaries of surgery while teaching others the value of patience and thorough study.
