Biography

Erastus Dow Palmer rose from modest beginnings to become one of America’s foremost sculptors of the 19th century, noted for his graceful neoclassical figures and finely carved portraiture that earned him acclaim in both national and international exhibitions.

His devotion to beauty and craft elevated marble sculpture in the young republic, and his work continued to inspire artists and patrons who visited Albany Rural Cemetery to pay respects to a master of form.
