Ernest de la Rue applied his engineering talents to improving the practical workings of his era, working on projects that required both patience and an eye for detail. He earned a reputation for thoughtful problem solving and for mentoring apprentices eager to follow in his footsteps.

He believed in the dignity of labor and the importance of making infrastructure serve communities, whether through reliable transport or sustainable systems, and he left grateful colleagues behind when he passed in 1929, his resting place at Kensal Green Cemetery.
