Esther Hill Hawks

Biography

Esther Hill Hawks (1833-1906) was a physician, educator, and writer whose courage carried her to serve freedpeople and wounded soldiers during the Civil War and to teach widely in Pine Grove after the conflict.

Her diaries, reflections on reform, and unswerving belief in equality inspired contemporaries and future generations, and her spirit endures through those who visit her resting place at Pine Grove Cemetery.
