Biography

Eugene Cernan, a naval aviator turned NASA astronaut, commanded Apollo 17 and left the last footprints on the lunar surface, embodying the dreams of exploration held by so many Americans. His steady leadership during that historic mission helped close the Apollo era with grace and courage.

After returning home he traveled widely to inspire students, advocate for science, and offer thoughtful reflections on the responsibilities of explorers, and his memory is honored at Texas State Cemetery.
