Biography
Eugene Fitch Ware answered the call of his country during the Civil War and later chronicled frontier life with a soldier's honesty and a poet's heart; his writings, often under the pen name 'Ironquill', captured the humor and hardships of the prairie. After the war he continued to serve the public as a legislator and advocate for Kansas veterans.
His powerful voice in the legislature and his literary contributions helped shape Kansas identity, and today his memory rests among comrades at Fort Scott National Cemetery.
