Ezequiel Cabeza De Baca

1864–1917 (age 53)

Governor of New Mexico

Biography

Ezequiel Cabeza De Baca was born in 1864 into a family that traced its heritage to the early Spanish settlers of New Mexico, and he grew into a thoughtful public servant who believed deeply in the promise of the young state. His work as a newspaper editor and later as lieutenant governor prepared him to bring the concerns of rural ranchers and Hispanic communities to Santa Fe.

When he became governor in 1917 he sought to expand bilingual education and improve the care of the state's less fortunate citizens, but his time in office was cut short by illness, leaving behind a legacy of heartfelt advocacy for unity and progress.
