Biography

François Rude (1784–1855) was a celebrated French sculptor whose monumental works exemplified the Romantic movement in nineteenth-century art. His most famous creation, the relief sculpture on the Arc de Triomphe, became an iconic representation of French national identity and artistic achievement.

Rude's artistic legacy profoundly influenced French sculpture and public art. His works combined technical mastery with emotional power, and he remained a central figure in French artistic circles until his death in 1855. He was honored with burial in Montparnasse Cemetery.
