Biography

Franz Ludwig Catel (1778–1856) was a distinguished German painter who became a prominent figure in the Neoclassical movement. Born in Berlin, he developed his artistic talents under rigorous academic training and eventually established himself as a master of historical and religious compositions. His career spanned the turbulent decades of European history, during which he maintained his commitment to artistic excellence and classical principles.

Catel spent much of his later life in Rome, where he was deeply influenced by the artistic heritage of the Italian Renaissance and classical antiquity.
