Biography
Frederick Augustus Conkling represented New York in Congress from 1859 to 1863, supporting the Union cause at the outset of the Civil War and advocating for transportation and communication improvements that tied the young nation more closely together.
After leaving the House he remained active in business affairs and civic boards, encouraging new investments in the city and lending his name to institutions that promoted education so that the state might benefit from the sacrifices of those years.
