Biography
Frederick Schwatka was an Army officer and Arctic explorer whose daring expeditions added to the world’s understanding of the polar regions, including an extensive search for the fate of Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition.
His meticulous journals, maps, and advocacy for scientific exploration were celebrated in his day, and his life of service is remembered with reverence at Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
