Biography

Frederick Townsend Martin (1849-1914) was a writer, traveler, and philanthropist whose volumes on Europe and the life of the idle rich blended observation with a deep sense of social responsibility. He lent his voice and means to settlement houses and charitable causes, urging the wellborn to answer the needs of the poor with imagination and humility.
