Frederick VI of Denmark

1768–1839 (age 71)

Biography

Frederick VI of Denmark, born in 1768, reigned during moments of great upheaval, navigating wars, reforms, and the transition from absolute monarchy toward a constitutional future. He strove to guide his people with moderation, commissioning improvements in education, infrastructure, and welfare during a reign that stretched into the dawn of the industrial age.

Despite the pressures of Napoleonic conflict and territorial losses, Frederick VI worked to embody the responsibilities of kingship with dignity, and his thoughtful governance is remembered in Roskilde Cathedral where he now rests among the monarchs of Denmark.
